F. W. Murnau’s “TABU: A Story of the South Seas” Comes To Edison Street / The Organ Loft
on April 26 & 27th with a Magical Score on the Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ by BLAINE GALE
Come to the South Seas and experience this final masterpiece by the great director
F.W. Murnau. While Hollywood was in the process of switching to sound Murnau left
and sailed to Tahiti in 1929 and spent 9 months creating a moving story of forbidden
love using the natives of the island. Stunning cinematography by Floyd Crosby won him an
Academy Award. “TABU: A Story Of The South Seas” is a fascinating melding of ethnographic documentary
and narrative about pearl fisherman Mathi and his ill-fated love for young Anna Chevalier, who’s
been deemed by the god’s as taboo to all men. Shot in Tahiti this would be the final masterpiece
by the director responsible for NOSFERATU, THE LAST LAUGH, FAUST, SUNRISE, and CITY GIRL. Murnau
died in a car crash just prior to the opening of the film.
