1928 ACADEMY AWARD WINNER TO SCREEN AT EDISON ST / THE ORGAN LOFT MARCH 22 & 23EMIL JANNINGS OSCAR WINNING PERFORMANCEfor “The LAST COMMAND” BLAINE GALE at the WURLITZER PIPE ORGAN GARY OLDMAN at the recent 90th Academy Awards ceremony won a well deserved Oscar for his performance of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour“. At the very first Oscar presentation EMIL JANNINGS was given the first Best Actor award for his stunning performances in “The LAST COMMAND” and the now lost “The Way ofAll Flesh”. Coming out at the end of the silent film era, “The Last Command” is one of the greatest films of 1928 and EMIL JANNINGS performance is a major part of that. He was widely hailed in the Silent Era as the greatest dramatic actor in the world. He plays the role of a sympathetic tyrant; an exiled Russian general turned Hollywood extra who lands a role playing a version of his former czarist self, bringing about a emotional climax to one of the last great silent films. William Powell gives a sterling portrait of a motion picture director and also a ringleader of an infuriated mob. Evelyn Brent, the lead of Trapped by the Mormons, is excellent as the woman who influences them both.Directed by Josf von Sternberg this film features stunning cinematography.
BLAINE GALE will have the challenge of providing a great score on the mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ for one of true masterpieces of the silent cinema.

“CHARLEY’S AUNT” COMES TO EDISON ST/THE ORGAN LOFT APRIL 12 & 13TH AT 7:30 PM FOR MORE THAN 125 YEARS “CHARLE’S AUNT” has been delighting audiences on stage and screen. It broke records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,446 performances in 1892! There have been at least 10 different film versions over the years. But none are any funnier than the1925 version starring SYD CHAPLIN (Charlie Chaplin’s half-brother). What a difference seeing a silent comedy with a live audience and a live score on the Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ by BLAINE GALE. And in the case of CHARLEY’S AUNT the larger the crowd the funnier the film is. So bring a crowd and prepare to laugh like you seldom have. VALENTINO CLASSIC “THE EAGLE” MAY 31 & JUNE 1 TO CLOSE SPRING
SEASON AT EDISON ST/THE ORGAN LOFT WITH BLAINE GALE AT THE
MIGHTY WURLITZER PIPE ORGAN Author Steven Schneider in his book, 1001 Movies
You Must See Before You Die picks Rudolph Valentino’s 1925 classic THE EAGLE as one
of those films to see. He was the original Latin Lover, a term that was invented
for RUDLOPH VALENTINO. The Great Lover, The Latin Lover, Rudy, Rudi . . .
“Woman are not in love with me but with the picture of me on the screen. I am merely the
canvas upon which women paint their dreams. –Valentino
THE EAGLE was one of two films in which he was teamed with the beautiful VILMA BANKY.
And they made a marvelous team. For those of you who are quick at picking
faces you might be able to spot Gary Cooper and Salt Lake’s own Mack Swain.
This along with The Son of the Sheik, which closed our season last year, are my pick for the
two best Valentino films. Brilliantly directed by the great Clarence Brown.
And organist BLAINE GALE will be at the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ to set the
mood for this exciting & romantic adventure. Hope that you will join us.
