  CHARLES CHAPLIN

     “The CIRCUS”

In the very first year that the Academy Awards were given out Charles Chaplin received a special oscar for his genius in writing, directing and starring in “THE CIRCUS”. And this 1928 delight remains as a tribute to what the silent art of film was able to achieve.  Over the past few months we have seen Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd use a monkey to help create some wonderful comedy in THE CAMERAMAN and THE KID BROTHER. Now you will see what Charlie does with not just one but several monkeys in one of the funniest and most hair-raising climaxes of any comedy. Don’t miss this one!

Emil Jannings “The Last Command”
Mar 22 @ 7:30 pm

1928 ACADEMY AWARD WINNER TO SCREEN AT EDISON ST / THE ORGAN LOFT MARCH 22 & 23EMIL JANNINGS OSCAR WINNING PERFORMANCEfor “The LAST COMMAND” BLAINE GALE at the WURLITZER PIPE ORGAN GARY OLDMAN at the recent 90th Academy Awards ceremony won a well deserved Oscar for his performance of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour“.  At the very first Oscar presentation EMIL JANNINGS was given the first Best Actor award for his stunning performances in “The LAST COMMAND” and the now lost “The Way ofAll Flesh”. Coming out at the end of the silent film era, “The Last Command” is one of the greatest films of 1928 and EMIL JANNINGS performance is a major part of that. He was widely hailed in the Silent Era as the greatest dramatic actor in the world. He plays the role of a sympathetic tyrant; an exiled Russian general turned Hollywood extra who lands a role playing a version of his former czarist self, bringing about a emotional climax to one of the last great silent films.  William Powell gives a sterling portrait of a motion picture director and also a ringleader of an infuriated mob. Evelyn Brent, the lead of Trapped by the Mormons, is excellent as the woman who influences them both.Directed by Josf von Sternberg this film features stunning cinematography.

BLAINE GALE will have the challenge of providing a great score on the mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ for one of true masterpieces of the silent cinema.

Charlie Chaplin in “Charlie’s Aunt” @ Edison Street Events
Apr 12 @ 7:30 pm

“CHARLEY’S AUNT” COMES TO EDISON ST/THE ORGAN LOFT APRIL 12 & 13TH AT 7:30 PM FOR MORE THAN 125 YEARS “CHARLE’S AUNT” has been delighting audiences on stage and screen. It broke records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,446 performances in 1892! There have been at least 10 different film versions over the years. But none are any funnier than the1925 version starring SYD CHAPLIN (Charlie Chaplin’s half-brother). What a difference seeing a silent comedy with a live audience and a live score on the Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ by BLAINE GALE.  And in the case of CHARLEY’S AUNT the larger the crowd the funnier the film is. So bring a crowd and prepare to laugh like you seldom have. EDISON STREET / THE ORGAN LOFT at 331 Edison St   (Just ¼ block east of State Street at 33rd South)  INFO: 801-485-9265 * ADULTS $6 * CHILDREN $5
